Lahore: 7 cops among 20 booked for Lahore court killings
LAHORE: Islampura police have registered two cases against 20 persons, including seven policemen, in connection with two killings in Bakshi Khana (lock-up) at the district and sessions court a day back. The first case was registered under Police Order against ASI Manzoor and Constables Waseem, Yasar, Amjad, Riaz, Yaseen and Sharif on the complaint of Sessions Court Security in Charge SI Raza Nisar. The second case was registered against Shaukat, Ahmad, Aurengzeb, Jehanzeb, Hassan, Mukhtar, Asif, Ghulam Rasool and four others on the complaint of victim Shafqat’s brother Haji Amjad Ali. However, it has yet to be established as to who supplied murder weapon to the accused in the Bakhshi Khana of the highly guarded court.
Shafqat, a resident of township, was shot dead by Azam who hailed from Sahiwal. Both the persons were taken to the court for appearance in their respective cases. Shafaqt was nominated in a murder case, numbered 949/10, registered at Township police station and Additional District and Sessions Judge Malik Mushatq was hearing his case. Azam was arrested in a narcotics case and Additional District and Sessions Judge Nisar Ahmed Khan was holding his trial in a case registered at Lower Mall police station.
On the day of the incident, police produced Shafqat in the court but brought him back to the Bakhshi Khana without any proceedings due to lawyers’ strike. Azam was also brought to Bakhshi Khana from Sahiwal for his case proceedings. Shafqat’s murder in the presence of police officials and then Azam’s killing by police after over half an hour shootout at the judicial lock-up caused panic among the lawyers, judges, petitioners and the accused persons who brought to the court for hearing of their cases.
The police killed Azam after an exchange of fire that continued for over half an hour. The witnesses said that Azam fired many bullets with his pistol but was killed in police action. No policeman was killed or injured in the encounter, which they believed was staged.
