KARACHI: A private bank was robbed in broad daylight within the Jackson police remit on Friday morning. The robbers also took away the weapon of a security guard of the Jackson Market branch of the United Bank Limited (UBL). SP Qamar Zaman of Baldia Division said that at about 10am five armed men snatched the pistol of a guard at the main gate and barged into the bank. Holding the staff and customers hostage at gunpoint, they looted Rs262,000 from the cash counter and fled.
The suspects did not enter the storm room where more money was stored, SP Zaman stated. A second guard of the bank was in the restroom all along and did not come out till the suspects had escaped, he added.
He said that on receiving information of the heist at around 10:15am police went to the bank and cordoned off the crime scene to collect evidence and speak to the bank staff and eyewitnesses.
The police are however yet to receive the CCTV footage as there are reports that some cameras of the bank have not been in a working condition.
Eyewitnesses told the police that the suspects drove to the bank on motorcycles and used a pistol in committing the offence.
