Army camp attack : 8 suspects arrested in Gujranwala
GUJRANWALA: Law enforcement agencies, on Saturday, arrested eight more suspects involved in Monday’s army camp attack. According to officials, police, along with secret agencies in a joint operation, raided on compounds located in People’s Colony and Aimanabad area of Gujranwala, and arrested eight suspects belonging to politico-religious and outlawed outfits, alleged of attacking the army camp near Gujrat. Police said fresh arrests were carried out on the information provided through interrogation by the accused that had been arrested earlier. The arrested men were shifted to an undisclosed place for further investigation.
Sources said the country’s premier intelligence and other agencies were actively working on the case and the role of the local police had been marginalised. Another source said the involvement of “religious extremists” could not be ruled out. The encampment was attacked on July 9 from a bridge over the River Chenab, close to the industrial city of Wazirabad, less than 150 kilometres southeast of Islamabad. The army personnel killed in the camp attack were identified as subedar Abdul Majid, Ghulam Rasool, hawaldar Shahid, naik Abdul Rauf, Aftab, GM Basit and Sher Ali. It should be mentioned that the said army camp was established one month earlier to search for an army major who went missing during a helicopter crash in the area.
