Karachi: 4 ‘gangsters’ held by Anti-Extremism Cell
KARACHI: The Anti-Extremism Cell (AEC) arrested four suspected gangsters in two separate raids and recovered arms from their possession. The detained men were wanted by the police in a number of target killing and extortion cases. SSP Mohammed Aslam Khan of the AEC said that the police acted on a tip off and raided the Mauripur area. An encounter took place near the Truck Adda, but the law enforcers moved in and managed to arrest Nawaz Kausar and Rashid. Both men were later taken to the investigation unit.
The detainees informed the AEC that some of their accomplices were at a house situated near Ghani Chowarngi in SITE. Subsequently, personnel of the cell conducted their second raid of the day, during which they got involved in another shootout. However, the raid was a success and the police arrested Jamshed Sonara and Nisaar Memon and recovered two 9mm pistols, three TT pistols, two hand grenades as well as 100 bullets.
The police said that their investigations confirmed that the arrested men were Lyari gangsters. Nawaz alias Kobra was absconding in 10 different cases and was wanted for the murders of Arshad in Mehmoodabad as well as Ali and Ijaz of the Aziz Lassi Group. Law enforcers claimed that Nawaz also killed Yousuf Lassi, a notorious drug peddler of Mehmoodabad, and tried to target Haji Qasim for refusing to pay extortion money.
Another suspect, Rashid, told the police that he and his accomplices attacked the Mohammed Hotel in Lyari on the instructions of a man named Babu, who paid them Rs100,000 for the job. They took illegal possession of the hotel and handed it over to Babu.
The suspect also confessed that he, Faisal Pathan and Shahid Rehman, grabbed a house near the Lyari KMC office, which was later handed to a man named Zaheer in exchange for Rs150,000.
One of the other detainees, Jamshed alias Sonara, told the officers that he extorted money from several traders in the Old City area. Giving an example, the suspect said he had been taking Rs5,000 every month from the owners of Nagori Milk House and Hilal Bakery since 2008. Jamshed revealed that they would also extort money from a union of traders in the area. He went on to tell the police that his gang leader would take Rs15,000 a month as extortion money.
Jamshed also confessed to kidnapping and killing a member of the Katchi Rabita Committee (KRC). He told the police that the victim was kidnapped from the cloth shop of Yaqoob in the Anjuman-i-Muslim Azad Hall and later killed. He added that in June, 2011, when the five bodies of Baloch men were brought to Lyari, he and his fellow gangsters were ordered to kidnap people from parts of the city. Jamshed said that his gang kidnapped four people from a bus on the ICI Bridge and later dumped their bodies in the area after shooting the victims dead. He even admitted to kidnapping and killing another man named Feroze. This victim was abducted from the Baldia area and his body was dumped in Kalakot.
Meanwhile, the fourth suspect, Nisaar Memon, told the police that he had joined the Lyari gangsters in 2010 and committed his first murder by targeting a political party activist identified as Khurram. Ten days after killing Khurram, he killed an MQM activist in the Lea Market and sometime later, also targeted two more activists in the Khadda Market and Sarafa Bazaar.
Memon confessed that in March, he and his accomplices killed two activists of the Katchi Rabitta Committee in Kagzi Bazaar. One of the victims was Muzamil, while the identity of the other was unknown to him.
He also told the police that he killed two more activists of the KRC on the ICI Bridge during Ramazan, last year. They had also killed an activist of the KRC, Faizan, in the Sarafa Bazaar area.
