Islamabad: ‘26 smugglers nabbed on eastern border in 3 years’
ISLAMABAD: Rangers, as part of their efforts to control smuggling at the eastern border, have nabbed 26 smugglers in the last three years. Of the total, five smugglers were arrested in 2010, 21 in 2011 and no arrest so far made in 2012. According to Ministry of Interior on Sunday, steps were taken to control smuggling which included erection of fence all along the eastern border while observations posts of the Pakistan Rangers (Punjab) and (Sindh) were also established on eastern border. Checking points and foot-patrolling were being carried out by Custom Authorities at Wagha, Attbari as well as Samjhota Express train.
It said responsibility of checking of different items being imported/exported and smuggled through entry point Wagha/Attari as well as through Samjhota Express train rest with Customs authorities.
However, no worthwhile smuggling is reported through this route so far. More so, since erection of fence all along the border being guarded by Pakistan Rangers (Punjab), volume of smuggling is less due to effective check by establishing check posts, patrolling duty and observations posts.
