Rawalpindi: Cops operating privately nabbed
RAWALPINDI: An awkward situation was created in front of a five-star hotel along The Mall when the driver of an officer of an agency, who got a carton of beer from the hotel, was intercepted by a group of police officials operating privately to grab liquor buyers, but later trapped by the area police on intervention of police high-ups, police sources said. The Tariqabad Chowki of the Civil Lines Police Station arrested two cops, posted at the Westridge Police Station and Police Lines, operating privately to grab liquor buyers, while an ASI of the RA Bazaar Police Station could not be nabbed yet, sources said. They added that police were hiding the incident for its sensitivity.
Sources said: “As the driver came out of the five-star hotel with a carton of beer tins and sat in the agency’s car, the three members of a ‘fake group of plainclothesmen’ intercepted him and asked him to go to the police station for carrying liquor illegally. During his body search when they recovered his department’s identity card, they slipped away from the scene.”
Sources said that during the scuffle, the mobile phone set of a cop fell on the ground, but he escaped from the scene. They said that the driver informed his boss about the incident. The boss contacted the area police and they reached the scene within minutes and took the mobile phone set into their possession.
During investigation, police made headway to the gang of cops operating illegally and found that the mobile phone set belonged to a constable, Abdul Qayyum, who was transferred to the Police Lines and was absent from his job for last two months, sources said. They said that Abdul Qayyum, who had been involved in robberies in jurisdictions of the Westridge and Civil Lines police stations, was arrested.
The cop, during investigation, disclosed the names of two other cops embroiled in the case, identified as Assistant Sub–Inspector (ASI) of RA Bazaar Police Station Amir Shahzad (Number 1774) and Constable Abid Ali alias Nomi (105/C) of the Westridge Police Station. Police arrested Abid Ali but ASI Amir Shahzad escaped from the RA Bazaar Police Station where he was deployed.
Sources said that Constable Abid Ali had been booked by police for his involvement in a robbery case but freed after an agreement with the complainant party.
The concerned police officers, when contacted by this correspondent to get their comments, refused to come on record but confirmed the incident on condition of anonymity. However police have not yet registered an FIR due to the sensitivity of the case, but trying to hunt the ASI involved in the case.
