Rawalpindi: Ringleader of a gang of robbers arrested in encounter with police
RAWALPINDI: The Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) arrested the ringleader of a gang of criminals, Pir Rizwan, involved in carjacking and armed robberies after an encounter between gangsters and police at Chakrali Bhadhal in Kalar Syedan on Monday morning, police said. The other gangsters managed to escape from the scene. The members of the gang, active in Rawalpindi, Islamabad and their adjacent areas, have stolen or snatched more than 350 cars, said police, quoting confessional statement of the arrested man. Sources in police, quoting the statement of the accused, claimed that the gang was enjoying the protection of a former member of the provincial assembly (MPA) from Rawalpindi since long, but the ex–MPA denied the allegation, saying that the gangsters were telling a lie.
The CIA sources said that Pir Rizwan, son of Bashir Hussain, had constituted a gang of criminals with his brothers, Haroon and Khurram, who managed to flee during the encounter with police.
The gangsters were proclaimed offenders and wanted by police for eight years. They were involved in five encounters with police but managed to escape every time. The police high-ups referred the case to the CIA after a poor performance of the area police, asking the CIA SP to smash the gang, sources said. They said that the CIA deployed plainclothesmen around their hideout in Kalar Syedan to keep an eye on their activities before the operation and collect details about members of the gang.
On Monday, the CIA SP constituted a team, comprising Inspector Raja Khayyam, ASI Raja Gultaj and dozens of cops, and surrounded the hideout without informing the area police. However gang members, sensing danger, escaped in two cars, bearing registration number LEA–6054 (Toyota Corolla XLI) and 302 of Lahore, after opening fire on the CIA team. The CIA men chased the fleeing cars and intercepted them at a distance of about two kilometres from the hideout but the gangsters scattered in the area leaving their cars behind and took positions at various points and started shooting on the CIA men, sources said. They said that during the encounter, a bullet hit the ringleader, Pir Rizwan, who fell down and surrendered to the CIA. As police arrested Pir Rizwan, his accomplices attacked the police team again to get him freed, but police foiled their attempt, sources said, adding that other gangsters managed to escape from the scene.
