Militants kill 3 cops in Hangu ambush
HANGU: Three policemen were killed when militants affiliated with the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) sprayed the police mobile van with bullets on the Thall–Hangu Road in the Kotki area here on Thursday, official sources said. The sources said the policemen were on a routine patrol in the area when the militants opened fire on their vehicle from two sides, killing driver Jehanzeb and Constables Mazhar Shah and Tahir on the spot.
After killing the cops, the militants emerged from the nearby trees on both sides of the road and indiscriminately sprayed the bodies of the cops with bullets, the sources said. Sources said the bodies of the slain policemen were mutilated beyond recognition due to the heavy fire.
The bodies were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital by a police party which reached the spot a bit late, eyewitness reports said, adding, the attackers managed to flee after the gruesome attack.
The spokesman for the TTP, Ihsanullah Ihsan, called reporters from an unknown location soon after the incident and claimed responsibility for killing of the cops. He threatened that the Taliban militants would intensify attacks in the area.
When contacted, the District Police Officer (DPO) Dr Saeed Ahmad said the cops were patrolling the area when they were attacked by the militants hiding in the roadside jungle. He pledged that the police in Hangu would continue operations against the militants to maintain law and order.
He said the police and the security forces picked up 20 suspects for questioning after the attack. Meanwhile, the collective funeral prayer for the fallen cops was offered at the Police Training College in Hangu. A large number of local residents and cops attended the funeral.
