Karachi: 7 more political activists slain
KARACHI: The blood of political activists continued to be spilled on the city’s streets as seven people, including two PPP activists, an ANP ward president and an MQM man were killed in various incidents across the city on Tuesday, while the office of a religious party was attacked by miscreants. Amjad Gul and Tariq Mehmood – both activists of the PPP – were gunned down by suspected drug mafiosos near the Bismillah Chowk of Baldia Town. The assailants arrived at the scene and shot the victims multiple times with 9mm pistols before fleeing the scene of the crime. The Station House Officer of Saeedabad, Mohammad Irshad, said that both victims were rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), but it was too late and both died while being treated. The empty bullet casings recovered from the scene of the crime were sent to the Sindh Police Lab for forensic tests. Investigators termed the double murder as a targeted killing.
Meanwhile, the tortured and bullet–riddled body of Imran Memon was found from the Machar Colony of the Docks police jurisdiction.
The body was shifted to the CHK and a message was aired on police control. Subsequently, a family member of the victim approached the police and was able to identify the body.
He confirmed that the body belonged to Imran Memon, a newspaper seller residing in the Niazi Chowk of Lyari. The relative told the police that Imran left home on Monday and had not returned.
JI supporter killed
Over in the New Karachi area, a Jamaat-e-Islami supporter named Liaquat was gunned down while he was outside his house in Sector 5J.
The Sub–Divisional Officer of the New Karachi Division, Chaudhry Mohammad Akhtar, said that the victim was sitting outside his house in the wee hours of Tuesday morning when two armed men on a motorcycle arrived at the scene and shot him once in the chest before speeding away.
Investigators said that Liaquat was killed in a targeted attack and added that he owned a tea stall.
ST activist dies
Meanwhile, Mohammad Hussain Qadri, who was injured in an attack on the Sunni Tehreek’s Baldia Town Sector Office died on Sunday. Two other people were also killed in the same attack, while Qadri had suffered injuries.
MQM activist slain
In a late Tuesday night development, armed men targeted an MQM activist, Mujahid, in the Jamshed Quarters police jurisdiction.
The police said that Mujahid was sitting at a general store situated in the Martin Quarters area when two armed motorcyclists shot him once in the head and fled. The injured was moved to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he died.
As news of his death spread, trouble was witnessed in Martin Quarters, PIB Colony and Jamhsed Road, where armed men forced traders to close their businesses by firing in the air.
Reports emerged that unidentified miscreants attacked the office of a religious party in the Jamshed Quarters. Heavy contingents of the police and Rangers were deployed to control the situation.
Investigators termed the murder of Mujahid as yet another in the ongoing spate of target killings and added that he was a former Unit Incharge of Unit–56.
Meanwhile, the Rangers also conducted a search operation in the Martin Quarters of the Jamshed Quarters.
ANP leader targeted
In yet another case late on Tuesday night, armed men gunned down Amanullah, a local area president of the Awami National Party’s UC–13 ward. The victim was killed in the MPR colony of the Orangi Town area.
SDPO Rustam Nawaz said that two men on a motorcycle shot the ANP activist multiple times in the upper torso and fled from the scene. The injured was taken to the CHK, where he breathed his last during treatment.
Tension developed in the area after the killing as armed men resorted to aerial firing and forced traders to pull down their shutters. Meanwhile, activists and the leadership of the ANP staged a protest to demand the arrest of the killers.
Suspected Lyari gangsters were killed in a late night encounter with the Malir City police.
SDPO Rao Mohammad Iqbal of Malir City said that the SHO of the police station raided the Jalbani Goth after receiving a tip that the suspects – wanted by the police in a number of target killing cases – were hiding in the area.
The alleged gangsters opened fire at the police, who retaliated, and the shootout resulted in injuries to three of the suspects.
The injured men were arrested by the police, while their accomplices managed to escape from the scene. All three of them were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where they died during treatment. Two Kalashnikovs and a repeater were recovered from the possession of the suspects.
SDPO Iqbal said that the deceased were identified as Fida alias Fidoo, Khalil, and Imam alias Bheel. He added that Fidoo was a gang leader in the Malir area, while Khalil and Imam were his sidekicks. The officer claimed that the suspects were wanted in a number of target killing, extortion and kidnapping for ransom cases.
He further stated that Fiddoo and Khalil were wanted by the Malir City police station for the target killings of Police Constables Pervez and Mushtaq, who were murdered by gangsters a few months ago.
