Peshawar: Bail denied in embezzlement case
PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Tuesday refused bail to Abdullah, Food Grain Supervisor, arrested on charges of misappropriation of wheat worth millions of rupees. A two-member bench comprising Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth and Justice Shahjehan Khan Akhunzada dismissed the bail petition after hearing arguments of both the parties. The National Accountability Bureau had arrested the accused on March 19, 2012 on charges of misappropriation of government owned wheat worth millions of rupees. Three other accused including Zahirullah, carriage contractor, Riaz-ul-Karim, currently working as Assistant Director Food, and Jawad Ali, District Food Controller Swabi, were also arrested.
It was stated in the NAB Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reference against the accused persons that on orders of Ex–Director Food 13,000 million tonnes wheat was to be transported from Dera Ismail Khan to Azakhel in Nowshera in 2010 through carriage contractor Zahirullah, Managing Director Sarhad Trading Company. A total quantity of 12,970 million tonnes wheat was lifted from Dera Ismail Khan but of 9674 million tonnes of the commodity was delivered at destination.
It was stated that a quantity of 3,296 million tonnes was misappropriated by the contractor and Food Department officials. The misappropriation of the wheat resulted in a loss of Rs 78.27 million to the exchequer.
Additional Deputy Prosecutor General, NAB Tariq Javed, opposed the bail to the accused person.
