Karachi: Imambargah trustee, cop among 6 killed
KARACHI: A trustee of an Imambargah and a policeman were among six people murdered in the city, police said on Wednesday. Fifty–five–year–old Syed MukhtiarAzmi, a trustee of ImambargahSyedusShuhada, Islamic Research Centre near Ayesha Manzil in Federal B Area, and his son Syed BaqarAzmi were gunned down near the Edhi Centre along University Road, PIB Colony. His grandson, Mohammad Ali, was also injured in the attack. SP Asad Raza of the Gulshan Division said Mukhtiar, Baqar and Ali were heading towards their home in Nazimabad No 4 in their car No ANQ–114 in the evening, when two men on a motorcycle intercepted their vehicle and opened fire on them. They were taken to the Aga Khan Hospital, where Mukhtiar and Baqar succumbed to their injuries, while Ali managed to survive. The SP said Mukhtiar had suffered a single bullet wound to his head while Baqar was shot in the chest and leg. Empty 9mm pistol bullet shells were found at the crime scene. The police official said Mukhtiar was also the owner of a travel agency.
After the legal formalities were completed, the bodies were handed to the heirs, who took them to RizviaImambargah in Nazimabad.
Police investigators believed that the dual murder was sectarian in nature and a banned outfit might be responsible for the attack. Afterwards, tension gripped the Rizvia, Gulbahar and Nazimabad areas, where some men fired gunshots in the air. Many residents also took to the streets, protesting the killing of Shia community members and demanding the arrest of the killers.
ASI, friend shot dead
An ASI and his friend were shot dead near U-4 Morr in North Karachi.
Khwaja Ajmer Nagri SHO Chaudhry Mohammed Afzal said ASI Abdul Ghaffor and HussainBux were standing outside a shop in the morning, when four men on two motorcycles opened fire on them. They were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH), where they breathed their last. Police sleuths said the ASI was posted at the Manghopir police station’s investigation department and actively involved in operations against criminal elements. His friend, Bux, was a tailor. They were both residents of North Karachi.
PPP activist murdered
A Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Youth Wing activist was murdered in Naval Colony near Hawkesbay Road. SP QamarZaman of the Baldia Division said 25–year-old Kashif, son of Abdullah, was present at a vegetable shop near his house in the afternoon when two men on a motorcycle sprayed him with bullets. He was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), where he expired.
A man was shot dead on a street in Khadda Market in the afternoon. Baghdadi SHO Haji Sanaullah said two men on a motorcycle opened fire on him. He was taken to the CHK, where he was pronounced dead. The victim had suffered a single bullet wound to his head. The SHO said the identity of the victim, who appeared to be in his 30s, could not be ascertained.
Two injured in minor blast
Two Christian siblings, both teenagers, were injured in a minor explosion inside a house in Christian Mohallah, Nusrat Bhutto Colony, Peerabad Sub–Divisional Police Officer Rustam Nawaz said 14–year–old Danish Masih and 18–year–old Sonia Masih, children of YounusMasih, were injured when two men on a motorcycle lobbed a homemade bomb inside their house. Danish and Sonia were taken to the ASH, where they were both out of danger. The police officer said the homemade bomb contained ball bearings.
Police investigators said the case was the first one to have occurred in the area. They pointed out that there are very narrow lanes in the area and it was not easy to escape. Most of the residents said they had not seen the attackers.
