Lahore: Cop nabbed for taking bribe from complainant
LAHORE: A police investigator has been arrested for taking Rs10,000 bribe from the complainant of a double–murder case under duress, police officials said on Monday. Sub Inspector Muhammad Tariq, of New Anarkali Police Station, has been arrested and a case has also been registered against him on the directions of DIG (Investigations) Chaudhry Shafique Ahmed. According to an official handout issued on Monday, Muhammad Arif appeared before the Investigations police chief and complained that his wife and son had been murdered but the investigation officer was protecting the killers. The resident of Anarkali further said he had to pay Rs10,000 bribe to the officer but he was still unwilling to take legal action against the criminals.
The DIG ordered the SSP (Investigations) Babar Bakhat Qurashi to initiate an inquiry into the incident and report back to him within 24 hours. During the inquiry, all the allegations levelled against the investigation officer were proved true. The Investigations police chief ordered the arrest of the officer. A case has also been registered against him.
Also, Gulshan-e-Ravi police on Monday claimed to have arrested five members of two gangs of bandits involved in several cases of robberies and street crimes. Police said the arrested robbers had confessed to 45 cases of robberies during preliminary investigations. Police also claimed that 18 cellular phones and illegal weapons were recovered from their possession. Further investigations were underway.
Also, a dispenser allegedly injected his 60-year-old grandmother to death over property dispute in the Factory area, police said on Monday.
Police investigators said the accused, Rizwan, had been arrested and during preliminary interrogations he had confessed to killing his grandmother, Zainab Bibi, a resident of Ittehad Colony.
