Karachi: Ex-MPA among 7 shot dead
KARACHI: Seven people, including a former member provincial assembly (MPA), were gunned down in different parts of the city on Saturday. Malik Ata, 60, was shot dead in Mehmoodabad No-3 area in the Mehmoodabad police jurisdiction in the morning. According to Sub–Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Abdul AleemBhullu, Malik Ata, a former MPA from Mehmoodabad, was sitting outside his house in connection with some construction work, when two armed men, riding a motorcycle, arrived there and sprayed him with bullets. He was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where he was pronounced dead. He suffered three bullet wounds to his upper torso which became the cause of his death. The police seized empty shells of 30–bore pistol from the scene for forensic tests. Police said Malik’s murder seemed to be sectarian in nature as the victim belonged to the Ahmedi sect. However, they were investigating the matter to ascertain the real motive behind the killing.
Two bullet–riddled bodies were found from Salar Compound in Garden police station area early morning. The corpses were moved to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) and a message aired on the Police Control, following which two families approached the Garden police station and identified the victims as NazeerMengal and Mohammad JamilKhaskheli.
According to SHO Fateh Sheikh, both Nazeer and Jamil were close friends and residing in Manghopir . They had left their homes for some work on Friday evening when unidentified criminals kidnapped them and later tortured them to death and threw their bodies in the area.
Nazeer was an employee of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), while Jamil was jobless. Police said that the double murder seemed to be a target killing, however, they were investigating the matter with other aspects.
MQM supporter slain
Shahid Dhobi was fired upon and seriously injured in Dhobi Ghaath in the same police remit in the afternoon. He was taken to CHK where he expired during treatment. The victim suffered two bullets of 9mm pistol to his upper torso that became the cause of his death.
Police said that Shahid’s murder appeared to be a part of target killing as he was also a supporter of MQM.
MunawarBaloch (32) was targeted in Malir City area in the morning. He was a resident of Gharibabad area and a labourer by profession.
According to SDPO Rao Mohammad Iqbal, Munawar was passing through a street in Saudi Colony when unidentified men riding a motorcycle opened random fire on him. As a result, a passer-by, Dost Mohammad Baloch, also sustained injuries. They were taken to the JPMC where Munawar succumbed to his injuries, while Dost Mohammad Baloch was admitted for treatment. The deceased suffered multiple bullet wounds to his upper torso, as the police seized empty casings of 9mm pistol from the scene.
ISO activist murdered
Ali Ahsan alias Khurram was shot dead in Iqbal Market police area in the morning. Ahsan was a van driver and he used to pick and drop working women. He was on his routine duty and wpassing from Sector-11 ½, Chisti Nagar, when two unidentified men, riding a motorcycle, intercepted his vehicle and sprayed him with bullets. Ahsan was moved to the AbbasiShaheed Hospital (ASH) where he was pronounced dead. The deceased received multiple bullet wounds on various parts of his body. Police said that Ali Ahsan was an activist of Imamia Students Organisation (ISO) and termed his murder a part of sectarian killing.
Cloth trader targeted
Haji Mohammed Yaqoob (40) was gunned down in Sohrab Goth police limits. He was a cloth trader and residing in Macher Colony.
According to SHO FasihZaman, deceased Yaqoob was heading towards his house on motorcycle and when he was passing through Ayub Goth area, two unidentified men, riding a motorcycle, came across him and shot him dead.
Yaqoob received a single bullet on his head that caused his instant death.
Yaqoob’s family had left for Jeddah and he was living alone at his house.
Police were investigating the matter to ascertain as to whether it was a target killing incident or he was murdered in some enmity.
