Lahore: People catch dacoit with police card
LAHORE: People in a densely populated area in the Nawankot police jurisdiction caught a dacoit and severely beat him before handing him over to police. Two accomplices of the arrested robber fled with the loot, including Rs 70,000 and a bike. Three robbers stormed into a general store at Nawankot and held the owner at gunpoint. They collected the loot and left the shop.
However, the owner raised alarm and locals started chasing the accused. They caught one of them and seized a pistol, a bike and a police identity card.
Keeping in view the traditional ‘Thana culture’, the people decided to set up their ‘own court’ in the open and started beating the accused with kicks and fists. They also contemplated a proposal to give an exemplary punishment to him. However, timely intervention of elders foiled their designs.
Meanwhile, Nawankot police officials reached the spot and arrested the accused. It was learnt that during their escape, two dacoits fired in the air and rode away, leaving their accomplice behind.
Police said that it was yet to be confirmed whether the arrested man was an employee of Punjab police or not. However, Iqbal Town SP claimed that the arrested robber had a fake identity card of Punjab Police. He claimed that the robber did not belong to Punjab police and had fake identity card of Punjab Constabulary, Farooqabad.
