Swabi: Police foil smuggling bid, seize timber worth millions
SWABI: Tehsil Topi police seized timber worth millions of rupees on Thursday and arrested the van driver who was trying to smuggle it to some undisclosed location in Peshawar, said police. They said they had been struggling to foil the smuggling of timber from the mountainous regions of Swabi and Haripur district. Both the districts share the boundary in the rocky region of Beer Ghali and the best quality of timber could be acquired from the forests of the border areas but the big question was that how he crossed the many police and forest check posts, established for foiling the timber smuggling. The Gadoon Amazai Industrial Estate police station patrolling party was on routine check up when a truck, bearing registration No 2636 appeared on Gadoon-Topi road near the Bisak bus stop. The driver speeded up the truck and wanted to escape but the police party chased and arrested him.
The arrested driver was identified Abid Khan son of Shamas ur Rehman, belongs to Gandaf region. A case against him has been registered in Gadoon Estate police station under the relevant law.
When contacted a distinguished police officer told this correspondent that usually the smugglers take the timber to different parts of the country, especially Peshawar and Rawalpindi. “The investigations are underway and we want to reach the group of the smugglers who indulged in taking valuable timber to different areas while indulging in deforestation,” he said.
Meanwhile, a woman was killed when some armed persons opened fire on her in MashoKhail area of Peshawar on Thursday.
Police said that mother of the deceased woman registered FIR informed that she and her daughter were on the way to school of her granddaughter when their ‘opponents’ identified as Noor Mohammad, Gul Mohammad, Usman, Niaz Ali and Ibrahim opened firing on them. The firing resulted in killing of Wakeel Jan, wife of Asamatullah. The complainant said that the incident resulted due to some family dispute.
Police registered FIR and started investigation.
