Karachi: Khairpur:10 suspects arrested after firing on PPP meeting leaves 7 dead
KARACHI: Pakistan People’s Party announced day of mourning today (Monday) after seven people, including a journalist, lost their lives in firing on a public gathering organized by the ruling party in Khairpur town of Sindh, SAMAA reports. Police say ten suspects have been arrested during a search operation in the town, adding that a team has been constituted to investigate the firing incident. The PPP has suspended all political activities for a day and announced holiday in the district. A local reporter was also killed in the deadly attack which left 12 PPP activists and three other journalists injured. Journalist organizations have announced protest demonstrations in Sindh against murder of their colleague.
PPP MNA Nafeesa Shah, the daughter of Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah, was also present in the meeting at her hometown when the attack occurred. However, she remained safe in the firing.
President Asif Zardari has condemned that gory incident and sought report from the provincial government, saying that firing on a political rally and unarmed workers is intolerable.
Zardari ordered the authorities to provide the best possible medical treatment to the injured.
Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, announced Rs300,000 each for the deceased families and Rs100,000 for the severely injured.
Police said the gunmen opened fire when people started coming to attend the public meeting, killing seven and injuring over 15 others.
The injured PPP workers and journalists were rushed to civil hospitals in Khairpur and Sukkur where a large number of relatives of the victims gathered. Shops and markets were closed in the area following the incident.
