Karachi: 12 car lifters arrested, weapons seized
KARACHI: The Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC) conducted four raids on Tuesday and arrested 12 suspects, including one in injured condition, from various parts of the city and recovered weapons, 10 snatched vehicles and several number plates of various vehicles from their possession. Addressing a press conference at his office on Tuesday, ACLC chief SSP Khurram Waris said that they constituted different teams under the supervision of DSPs to nab the vehicle lifters operating in the city. An ACLC team led by DSP Irfan Zaman raided a hideout of car lifters in Gulistan-e-Jauhar area in the wee hours of Tuesday. Upon seeing the police, the suspects opened fire and an encounter ensued following which Yar Mohammed alias Yaru, Shahid Hussain alias Kana, Ameer Zaman, Siddique and Ashiq Ali were arrested and four TT pistols were recovered from their possession.
The police recovered seven vehicles which were lifted from Darakhshan, Defence, Gulsitan-e–Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Ferozeabad areas. Ring leader Yar Mohammed alias Yaru was wanted by the police in more than 30 cases, while his accomplice Shahid Hussain was wanted in over 10 cases. They used to operate in Bahadurabad, Ferozeabad, New Town, Gulshan, and posh localities of the city.
After snatching the vehicles, the gang used to fix fake government number plates and transport them to Punjab through their buyers Asghar alias Makee and Haji Ikraam.
The ACLC had earlier arrested Yar Mohammed alias Yaru along with his accomplices four times and he even attempted to flee from the City Courts premises. Yaru also used to provide logistic support to his gang members.
Shahid had recently joined Yaru group after they developed friendship in prison and after obtaining bails from the court they again started their criminal activities. Shahid alias Kana was earlier arrested by the police in connection with house robberies in Gulshan, Aziz Bhatti and Sharea Faisal police areas.
Another team of ACLC raided a hideout in Quaidabad and after a brief encounter arrested Raza Khan Pathan, a member an inter-provincial gang of car lifters and during the search of his hideout the police recovered three vehicle which were lifted from Shahra-e-Noor Jehan, Super Market and Gulberg police limits.
Yet another ACLC team arrested Zubair Ahmed and Saeed Ahmed from New Karachi area and recovered two TT pistols and two motorcycles from their possession. The bikes were snatched from Sharea Faisal and Shahra-e-Noor Jehan police areas. They were usually lifting motorcycles from Hyderi, Gulshan and Gulistan-i-Jauhar areas.
Meanwhile, the ACLC received a tip that some wanted car lifters belonging to Mirani group were hiding in Gulistan–e–Jauhar area. Consequently, an ACLC team was despatched in the area, which intercepted the suspects near Millennium Mall. However, the suspects opened fire and an encounter ensued which resulted in the arrest of four suspects, including one in injured condition. The police also recovered four TT pistols and a Mehran car from their possession. The injured suspect, identified as Zohaib, was moved to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.
SSP Waris told the media that the suspects belonged to known Miraani gang of car lifters who was wanted by the ACLC in a number of vehicle snatching cases. The arrested suspects were identified as Asim, Mushtaq and Ata Mohammed. Further investigation was underway.
