Islamabad: ‘Rioters’ get bail
ISLAMABAD: A division bench of Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday granted bail to 52 suspects who were facing allegations of riots and arson during the protests against the anti-Islam film. The Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) of Rawalpindi on September 22 had sent these suspects to Adiala jail. IHC division bench, comprising Justice Noorul Haq N. Qureshi and Justice Mohammad Azim Khan Afridi, accepted the bail pleas of 52 suspects against surety bonds of Rs100,000 each.
Around two dozen lawyers, appearing before the court, said the police had registered false cases against the suspects as they were not involved in the riot. According to the FIR registered in the Secretariat police station, the detained were among the 6,000 angry protestors who, armed with iron and wooden rods, had scuffled with the police deployed near the Convention Centre on September 21.
