Karachi: Man fakes his own kidnapping
KARACHI: Driven by greed, a man faked his own kidnapping and tried to take a ransom of Rs500,000 from his unsuspecting father-in-law. An employee of the water board, Tariq Mehmood, went missing on October 7 and a short while later, his father-in-law received a phone call demanding the ransom. He was told that Mehmood would meet a gruesome end if the money was not delivered on time. SSP Niaz Ahmed Khosa, chief of the AVCC said the negotiations went back and forth for a while, but the ransom was finally settled at Rs250,000.
The ‘kidnapper’ agreed on a meeting place with the father-in-law. The meeting point was near Bait-ul-Mukarram, which oddly enough was very close to Mehmood’s residence. Keeping a close eye on the development, the police also reached the scene and saw a man wearing a motorcycle helmet. The cops pounced on the suspect. Once the helmet came off, the father-in-law and police were shocked to see the face of Tariq Mehmood.
The cell phone found from the man had voice-changing software, which he used to confuse his father-in-law and demand the ransom.
