Karachi: Gun attacks claim another 10 lives
KARACHI: Two activists of the Ahle–Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) were among the eight people shot dead in the city as targeted violence continued to claim more lives in the city on Tuesday. A doctor, a head constable and a trader were also among those murdered. Thirty-five-year-old Umar and his younger brother, Ikram, were gunned down by four armed men on two motorcycles near Soldier Bazar No-2 while they were sitting at their Pan Shop.
Locals rushed both the injured to the Civil Hospital in a critical condition, where they died during treatment. An MLO of the medical facility said that both victims suffered five bullet wounds each.
SP Gulshan told The News that both victims were workers of the ASWJ and real brothers. He added that the victims were murdered in a targeted attack.
Two activists injured
Meanwhile another two workers of the ASWJ, also brothers, were injured when four gunmen opened fire on them with sophisticated weapons at an oil shop near the Landi Kotal Chowrangi in the Taimuria police limits.
The injured men, 30-year-old Abdul Wahid and his elder brother, Ismail, 35, were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where they were being treated.
In 2010, the elder brothers of the two injured men — Qari Shoaib and Qari Hamid — were also gunned down at the same location. A spokesman for the ASWJ claimed that 15 of their workers were gunned down in the month of October.
Head constable killed
A head constable of the police’s Special Branch was also shot dead in the city, police said on Tuesday.
The head constable was murdered at Napier’s timber market in the morning.
Napier SHO Aslam Gujjar said 40–year–old Sajid Baloch was on his way to work when two men riding a motorcycle wearing helmets opened fire on the constable.
Baloch was rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where he breathed his last. He was shot twice in the head. The police officer said the assailants had used a 9mm pistol.
Baloch was posted at the Special Branch’s Fisheries Cell and lived in Nava Lane, Kalakot.
The constable has left behind a widow and three children. His funeral prayer was offered at the police’s Garden headquarters.
Shop owner killed
The owner of a cosmetics shop was gunned down in Jamali Goth, Sohrab Goth. The area’s SHO, Fasih Zaman, said two men on a motorcycle stopped outside the shop in the afternoon and shot 42-year-old Shakirullah Mehsud.
He was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead. He suffered multiple bullet wounds to his upper torso. The police found TT pistol bullet shells at the crime scene.
Mehsud resided in the same area where he was murdered. “Mehsud had come to the city from Waziristan and there are reports that he had enemies in his hometown,” a police investigator told The News.
Milk shop owner targeted
The owner of a milk shop was murdered in Gutter Baghicha, Pak Colony. The area’s SHO, Abdul Waheed Awan, said Azam was present at the shop in the afternoon when three men on a motorcycle arrived there and opened fire on him.
Azam and two of his employees were moved to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where the shop owner succumbed to his injuries. Azam was shot twice in the chest.
Police sleuths said they would investigate the possibility of Azam receiving extortion threats.
Later, the traders of the area, enraged over the killing, staged a protest and demanded the arrest of the assailants.
Store owner shot dead
A man, who was shot at his general store in Block-M, North Nazimabad on late Monday night, expired on Tuesday.
Taimuria SHO Ijaz Lodhi said four men riding two motorcycles fired gunshots at the store, injuring Zohaib and two of employees. They were moved to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Zohaib was later shifted to the Aga Khan Hospital, where he died on Tuesday afternoon. The SHO said the owner of the general store had suffered multiple bullet wounds. “The attackers used a 9mm pistol.”
Forty-year-old Dr Abdul Hameed was shot dead by two gunmen at the Mohammadi Clinic near the Usmani Masjid. The assailants barged into the place and opened fire at the doctor while he was checking his patients.
The armed men fled from the scene, leaving the doctor lying in a pool of blood. Patients at the clinic ducked for cover and ran helter-skelter to save their lives.
The body was taken to the Civil Hospital for legal formalities. An MLO said the victim had been shot twice in the upper region of his body.
The Station House Officer of Saeedabad, Gulshan Junejo, told The News that five 9mm bullet casings were recovered from the crime scene. He added that the deceased was killed in a targeted attack.
Slaying in Saeedabad
In another incident in the Saeedabad police remits, 45-year-old Basheer was shot dead by two armed motorcyclists near the Basheer Masjid in Baldia Town No-8-B. The victim was sitting at his sweets shop when the attack took place. Locals took the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
An MLO at the medical facility said the victim suffered three bullet wounds. The police believed that Basheer was killed after he refused to pay extortion money.
Two killed in clash
Two people were killed and three others injured during a clash between Lyari gangsters and another group on the Kalakot police limits.
Twenty-five-year-old Hamid and four other unidentified men suffered bullet wounds in the clash that took place near the Old Haji Camp.
The injured were taken to the JPMC and a private hospital in a critical condition, where Hamid and another unidentified man, appearing to be in his thirties, breathed their last.
