Peshawar: Court awards 5-year RI to ex-Xen
PESHAWAR: Accountability Court No. IV, Peshawar, on Tuesday awarded five years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs39.042 million to ex-XEN Works & Services Department, Mardan, Abdul Qayyum Marwat, in misuse of authority cases. The two cases were filed by NAB (KP), said the spokesman for NAB (KP) here, adding that in one case, the accused as XEN C&W Department at Mardan utilized million of rupees out of public money placed at his disposal under the programme titled “Expansion and Development Programme for Primary Education in KP” for supply and fixing steel grill/railing to the primary schools in Mardan costing Rs3,200 million.
The contract was awarded to the contractor by the accused at exorbitant rates without seeking administrative approval from the competent authority, thus causing a loss of Rs47.648 million, he said.
In another case of misuse of authority, the accused misappropriated government funds meant for the repair and maintenance work in various schools in District Mardan thus causing a loss of Rs1.277 million to the national exchequer.
The other accused in the cases have already paid the embezzled amount to the exchequer through Voluntary Return (VR) and Plea Bargain (PB).NAB had filed two separate references of misuse of authority. The court decided both the references in favour of NAB (KP), and the accused was arrested and sent to Central Prison Peshawar.
