MINGORA: The police arrested two members of a jirga for ordering the marriage of a six–year old child under “swara” in Matta tehsil here on Wednesday, official said. District Police Officer Gul Afzal Afridi said the police were investigating the “swara” case and had arrested two of the five accused. He said the families of Azeem Khan and Bahadur had a marriage dispute. He said a case was registered against the jirga members Umarzada, Daud and Khanzada and two other accused Bahadur and his son Saranzeb. The DPO said that two of the accused, Umarzada and Bahadur, had been arrested and that protection had been provided to the victim’s family.
Talking to reporters, Azeem Khan said that Bahadur Khan wanted to marry a girl named Bachagai to his son Saranzeb and the girl’s family accepted the marriage proposal.
He said his family also asked for the girl’s hand in marriage and her parents agreed and the marriage was solemnised in the presence of a large number of people.
He said this enraged Bahadur’s family and they kidnapped his daughter-in- law Bachagai. Later the jirga settled the dispute and he paid Rs500,000 to the rival party as compensation.
However, he said that even after paying the compensation amount Bahadur’s family demanded that his six-year old daughter Bibi Roza should be married to his son. “My brothers Daud and Umarzada agreed to marry my daughter Bibi Roza to Saranzeb. After the agreement between my brothers and Bahadur, I went to the district coordination office and asked for help and luckily the DCO directed the police to intervene in the matter which saved my daughter,” he said.
