Karachi: JPMC’s MLO files FIR against vandals
KARACHI: An FIR has been lodged at the Saddar Police Station by Dr Kaleem Sheikh, a senior Medical Legal Officer (MLO) at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), against some men affiliated with a religious party for allegedly vandalizing his office on Monday night. The MLO said the workers came to the emergency department of the JPMC with a police ASI in tow and demanded him to look at the body of a bruised worker immediately. Speaking about what transpired, Dr Sheikh said the workers had come from Khwaja Ajmer Nagri, which fell in district west, stressing that Abbasi Shaheed Hospital dealt with cases from that area.
He said the workers had been referred to the JPMC by Liaqat National Hospital, adding that after having taken an hour long, they were in no mood to listen.
“The men belonged to the Sipah e Sahaba Pakistan (SSP). The police ASI, who must be aware of the inner workings and principals of an MLO office, rather than explaining to them that the case did not fall under my area, stood like a silent spectator. I wanted to help. But they kept nagging me,” Dr Sheikh narrated.
Before the MLO could begin to explain the dynamics, the accused started throwing things around in his office. Within minutes, windows were smashed, telephone lines destroyed and someone also snatched the doctor’s cell phone.
“A person who comes in with a deceased relative or a friend doesn’t understand the process or the law. The responsibility lay with the police officer, who unfortunately was of no help.” SSP Saqib Suleman is heading the investigation.
DIG West Javed Odho, who was informed of the incident, said that they were inquiring about the ASI’s role but could not say anything before the investigation was complete.
It is not the first time that the JPMC’s MLO office had come under attack. Many times in the past, relatives or friends of some deceased have thrown stones or thrashed doctors and other staff.
