The three were wanted in a number of cases of sectarian and political killings. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohammad Aslam Khan of the AEC said an informant had tipped him off that the accused were present in the Manghopir area. Acting on the tip-off, a police team raided the area and arrested Syed Ali Raj alias Ali after an encounter. However, his associates managed to escape under the cover of fire.
