Karachi: Car snatchers’ gang busted
KARACHI: The Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC) busted an inter–provincial gang of car snatchers recently after conducting multiple raids in different parts of the city. They also recovered six cars and 15 motorbikes. In a press conference held at the ACLC office near Artillery Ground on Thursday, SSP ACLC Imran Shaukat said that the notorious gang Gopang had been apprehended quite a few times before. SSP Shaukat said that mainly three gangs were involved in car snatching in the city, and Gopang was one of them. During several raids, the ACLC recovered six cars – mostly Toyota, Honda City and Daihatsu Cuore – and 15 motorbikes.
The registration documents of the cars snatched within the last one month were also found. In addition, punching machines, fake registration plates, chassis and engine numbers were seized. The gang leader, Mitthal, and his son, Mohammad Mitthal, had not been captured as yet, the SSP added.
He said recently a number of motorbikes were stolen from the premises of High Court, and the ACLC believed the Mitthal’s were involved in it.
He said that the cars were mainly stolen from Karachi and then taken away to Shikarpur, Dera Murad Jamali or Dera Bugti areas.
“It is a multi-tier system. The stolen car is dumped at a deserted place from where another man drives it to Sindh, Balochistan or Punjab,” the SSP said.
He identified Central District as the main hub of car theft. For instance, in recent months, many car snatchings were reported from Gulberg, Liaquatabad, Surjani Town, Shahrah e Noor Jahan and Shah Latif Town.
The ACLC SSP said that they were exploring the possibility of criminals obtaining help from the police or excise department.
The SSP added: “It doesn’t seem like the sort of crime which is executed in a spur of the moment decision. It is purely an organised crime, in which, criminals might be getting help from some elements within the police department.”
Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) arrested a target killer, Saeed Alam alias Munna Bengali in Korangi K–area and recovered five Kalashnikovs and two pistols from his possession.
