Karachi: Public beat suspected criminal to death
KARACHI: With the masses fast losing their faith in the police’s ability to protect their lives and property, some members of the public decided to take the law into their own hands in the SITE-A area by chasing down a man suspected of attempted murder and killing him. The incident took place at around 11:30am when the SITE–A police was informed that a man had been shot in the Metroville-II area. When the cops arrived at the scene of the crime, they found that the man suspected of the attack was being beaten by locals of the area. The suspect, who was by now severely injured, was identified as Shams–ur–Rehman, while the person he allegedly shot was Jameel, a resident of the area.
The police tried to secure the suspect, but the mob was so enraged that they continued to beat Shams and reinforcements had to be called in. The cops finally managed to free the suspect from the clutches of the locals and rushed him to the JPMC, while Jameel was earlier taken to the same hospital. However, Shams the extent of Shams’ injuries was so serious that he died at the hospital.
According to the investigations of the police, Jameel was sitting outside his house with some friends when the suspect pulled up to the scene on a motorbike and shot the victim once in the right side of the upper torso before fleeing. Shams was trying to make his escape when the locals of the area started chasing him. The alleged gunman lost control of his motorcycle and slid off the road. That is when the public pounced on him and started thrashing him with their fists and any other objects they could get their hands on. SP Abro of the SITE Division said that the police found four spent bullet shells fired from a 9mm pistol at the scene, while the weapon itself was seized from the suspect.
According to the statement of one of Shams’ relatives, Rahim, the suspect originated from Swat and had come to Karachi a few months ago and started working as a distributor of calling cards. Rahim added that Shams left the house on Sunday morning for a supply of calling cards and later, the family heard news that he had been beaten to death by the public after he attempted to murder another man.
SP Abro said that the injured Jameel was an employee of a medical company and added that the police was unable to confirm the motive for Shams’ attack; however, investigations were still ongoing.
