Khanewal: ‘Embezzlement’ of Rs 7m allocated for park; Inquiry shelved to save favourites
KHANEWAL: An inquiry into alleged embezzlement of Rs 7 million allocated for renovation of Fazal Park has been shelved to save the skin of favourite officials. Fazal Park was established for the people in the name of the first deputy commissioner Syed Fazal Hussain Shah. On the demand of people, an amount of Rs seven million was allocated for the renovation of the park by former DCO QaziIshraq Ahmad and the project was started by former DCO Rashid Mehmood. EDO Finance Asghar Bhatti was monitoring the project, which was abandoned due to unknown reasons.
Sources said that a major portion of the amount was embezzled by the contractor allegedly with the help of the EDO Finance and the monitoring committee. They said substandard material was utilised in the park’s renovation, while hundreds of trees worth millions of rupees were removed and shifted to an unknown place. They added that a meagre amount was shown in the record after auction of the said trees.
They added that following public complaints, an inquiry was started by the district administration, but it had been shelved due to lack of interest of the TMA administrator. When contacted, DCO Nadeem Mehboob said that the inquiry was not in his notice and action would be taken against responsible officials if found guilty.
