Karachi: Rapist jailed for 10 years
KARACHI: A judge on Wednesday convicted a man of rape and sentenced him to 10 years in jail. Additional District and Sessions Judge (East) Minthar Ali Jatoi found Khurram Shehzad guilty of raping a woman, Tressa, and imposed a fine of Rs50,000 on him. In case of defaulting on the payment of the fine, the convict would have to face another term of three months of rigorous imprisonment. The court gave the benefit of the doubt to co-accused, Samra, Fauzia and Shamail, who were alleged to have trapped Tressa and assisted Shehzad in raping the woman in 2011. The case had been registered by the Zaman Town police.
Shahid Husain adds: War Against Rape (WAR), Karachi, has hailed another legal victory in the rape case of the 26–year old nurse. WAR, an NGO working to provide an array of direct services to survivors of sexual assault and rape, commended the efforts of its advocates, Farida Moten and Asia Muneer who, along with Additional District Public Prosecutor Rasheed Ahmed, worked tirelessly to ensure that this heinous crime would not go unpunished.
On May 28, 2008, the nurse was on her way to work in the Korangi area when someone hit her on the head from behind and put a cloth to her face to render her unconscious. When she regained consciousness, she found herself in a house and in the presence of the accused, his wife and sister. The two women beat her, and after they left she was raped by the accused. The woman escaped from the house and later lodged an FIR against the accused and the two women.
