Lahore: ‘35 terror suspects arrested during Ashura’
LAHORE: Inspector General of Police Punjab Habib-ur-Rehman said that police had foiled possible terror attempts by arresting 35 suspects in different districts during Ashura. He said that three terror suspects were arrested in Lahore, two in Gujrat, four in Faisalabad, nine in Layyah, six in Sargodha, 01 from Vehari and 10 in Multan. He was addressing a press conference at Police Club on Monday. Lahore CCPO Aslam Tareen, DIG (Investigations) Chaudhry Shafique, DIG (Operations) Muhammad Tahir Rai and SP CIA Omar Virk were also present.
The IGP said that the terror suspects arrested from Sargodha belonged to Bajur Agency and Khyber Agency and they had been residing close to an Imambargah in Sargodha. They had been planning to attack processions on Muharram 9 and 10.
Police also arrested four terror suspects in Faisalabad including a woman. One of the suspects was in police uniform while they had been planning to attack an Imambargah, or a procession or a Majlis in the limits of Balochni police station. Faisalabad police also recovered a rifle, a gun and bullets in a huge quantity from their possession, he added. He said police bravely foiled nefarious designs of anti–state elements by launching successful operations.
“It all happened due to untiring efforts of all police officers and officials and we salute them,” he added. The IGP said that police provided security to 37,249 Majalis and 9,136 processions all over the province while 69 units of the Pak army and 35 units of Pak rangers were also on call to cope with any emergency.
To a question on security for international cricket matches, the IGP Punjab said police provided foolproof security to the recently held International Sports Festival and were also ready to provide best security to international cricket teams.
To another question about deaths in Shahdara Town because of intoxicated syrup, the IGP said the factory owner had fled soon after the incident. However, the owner of the medical store and his employees have been arrested and being interrogated. The media will be informed accordingly in case of any development, he added.
