Lahore: 519 gangs arrested during 2012: police
LAHORE: Police smashed 519 gangs and arrested 1,483 outlaws besides recovering stolen items worth Rs 103 millions during 2012, a police spokesman said. “Police also traced 1,717 cases against the gangsters while 8,177 proclaimed offenders and 1,914 court absconders were arrested during the same period,” said the spokesman on Sunday. About 8,982 cases were registered against 4,994 accused on having illicit weapons. During action against drug sellers, 6,389 cases were registered and 6,556 culprits were arrested while 209kg of heroin, 1560kg of charas, 29kg of opium and 83,755 bottles of liquor were recovered from the accused.
In a special campaign, 1,681 cases were registered against gamblers and 6,144 criminals were arrested. DIG (Operations) Muhammad Tahir Rai and SSP (Operations) Sohail Akhtar Sukhera have directed Lahore Police to utilise all resources to curb crimes in the city.
