Islamabad: University student arrested for alleged murder, rape of minor
ISLAMABAD: The police have arrested a university student who allegedly murdered an 11-year-old-girl, who was reportedly raped and then burnt to death in Sector I9. The university student is said to be the boyfriend of the minor’s tutor. Inspector Mehboob Ahmed, a senior police official at Bhara Kahu Police Station confirmed the arrest and said that the accused student was in police custody.
Twenty three-year-old Ibrar, has reportedly confessed to the crime after his girlfriend, Zahra Mehek, informed the police that her boyfriend had raped and killed a minor girl, when she denied physical relations with him.
Advocate Muzamil Gujjar, lawyer of the accused family, alleged that the police had falsely implicated Ibrar in the case. The lawyer claimed that there was no evidence that suggested his client’s involvement.
According to a police official, Mehek had confessed that her boyfriend (Ibrar) had also pressurised her for physical relations and after her denial, which “upset” her boyfriend, the man forcibly raped the 11-year-old child, due to which the child bled. Assuming that she had died, the man and the tutor then set her on fire to cover up their crime, the official said.
The lawyer of the accused girl denied the allegations and said that it was the “fear of the Supreme Court that the police had concocted such lies”. Muzamil Gujjar said that his client had not given any such statement before the police.
The defence lawyer alleged, “Police are telling lies and trying to appease the Supreme Court by saying that they have arrested the culprit and they are trying to implicate these innocent families to hide their own failure.”
He also alleged that his client, Zahra Mehek, was kept in police custody for more than 16 hours and was physically and mentally tortured by policemen from the Bhara Kahu and Sector I9 police stations, to force her to confess the crime.
The lawyer further alleged that policemen had also tortured the accused man and forced him to own up to raping and killing the diseased.
Bhara Kahu Police Station Sub-inspector Maqsood Ahmad said, “We got a four–day remand of Ibrar on Saturday from Session Judge Ayesha Shabbir and the accused has confessed to raping and killing the girl in the initial investigation.” He also said that further details of the reports would be brought to light after questioning the accused.
Meanwhile, the family of Ibrar also denied the charges and said that the police had no evidence that linked Ibrar to the crime and the police were relying on the statement of the younger brother of the deceased minor girl, “who is only four years old”.
A family member of Ibrar, who wished to remain unnamed, told Daily Times, “It is an attempt by the police to justify to the Supreme Court that they are concerned about the murder.”
