Peshawar: Dozens held in search operation
PESHAWAR: The police backed by the Frontier Constabulary and Frontier Corps launched a massive search in the rural Peshawar and adjacent semi–tribal area Tuesday a day after the suicide attack on the Judicial Complex in the provincial capital. The CCTV footage of the attack was also released which showed that two men in white shalwar kamees running towards the courts building amid continuous firing from their pistols at 12:18 pm.
Heavy contingents of police, backed by the FC personnel and armoured personnel carriers, conducted an extensive search operation in Matani, Badaber, Sheikhan, Sarband and other towns of the rural Peshawar as well as parts of the adjacent Frontier Region.
Dozens of suspects were arrested during the drive and shifted to an unknown place. They are being questioned to get some clue about the militant network operating from the tribal and rural areas close to the provincial capital.
“Hundreds of law–enforcers took part in the operation that was launched following an attack by the militants on the Judicial Complex in Peshawar that killed four people and injured over 47 others, including policemen, lawyers, litigants and others,” said an official of the police.
The CCTV footage of the incident released showed that two men armed with 9MM pistols started firing while running from the parking lot towards the courts. Both the men seemed locals and in their 20s, one of whom blew himself up near the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Kulsoom Azam while another was shot dead before he could blow himself up. His jacket was later defused by the experts of the bomb disposal unit. The two attackers, however, killed four persons and injured over 47 others in the brazen attack. The injured included six policemen, eight lawyers, many judicial staff members and litigants.
The first information report of the incident was lodged late Monday night in the East Cantonment Police Station against unidentified militants. Police were also investigating to find if there was any other supporter of the two attackers who might have escaped while taking advantage of the mayhem.
PHC Chief Justice Dost Mohammad Khan directed the provincial and city police chief to unearth the network behind the attack.
