Lahore: 11 officials arrested on DRO’s order
LAHORE: Lahore police on Wednesday arrested 11 officials of different departments on charges of not providing lists of departmental staff to be assigned election duties. The SHOs of different police stations produced 11 officials from departments, including DGPR, Directorate Animal Health, fisheries, Punjab Services Tribunal, anti–corruption, transport, PND, Pakistan tourism, Directorate of Agriculture, Government Degree Collage, Shadbagh.
Sources in election cell said that the district returning officer (DRO) had demanded 5,000 staffers to keep them reserve to tackle any shortage of staffers on the polling day. The DRO had directed the officials of aforesaid departments to produce the lists of their staffers but they did not bother to act upon the court order.
The judge on Wednesday issued bail–able arrest warrants for the aforesaid officials and directed the police officials concerned to produce them before the election cell after arresting them. The SHOs of different police stations produced them before the election cell where the arrested officials assured the in charge of the election cell to provide lists by May 9 (today).
Liaison Officer Shair Abbas Awan admonished those who were produced before him and asked about the delay in providing lists of their staffers. Some of the officers took plea that they were not delivered any sort of order from the DRO in which they had been directed to provide lists of their staffers while some said that their lists were ready and would be provided in a few hours. Meanwhile, District Returning Officer Nazir Ahmad Gajana reserved the decision for May 9 (today) on PTI chief Imran Khan’s violation of sections 38 and 39 of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Code Of Conduct.
