Karachi: 2 suspects arrested in Zahra Shahid murder case
KARACHI: The police claim to have made some headway in the murder investigation of Pakistan Tehreek–e-Insaaf’s (PTI) Sindh Senior Vice President, Zahra Shahid Hussain, by arresting two suspects allegedly involved in the killing. AIG Iqbal Mahmood formed an investigation team under the supervision DIG South Ameer Shaikh and SSP South Nasir Aftab.
The team received a tip and raided the hideout of the suspects, who were arrested and taken to an undisclosed location.
Hussain was killed outside her residence by two armed motorcyclists in DHA Phase–IV of the Gizri police limits on May 18. The murder took place on the eve of re–polling in 43 stations of NA–250, where the atmosphere had remained tense for several days.
Police initially said it seemed like a ‘mugging and street crime’ as the armed persons ‘tried to snatch Zahra Shahid’s purse’ and fired a single shot under her chin when she resisted. The bullet wound killed her instantly.
Subsequently, the investigators said they were probing the matter further in the light of statements alleging that it was a target killing. After the brutal murder, PTI leader Firdous Shamim said that Zahra Shahid was a maternal figure for party members and a former teacher at the Karachi University, who was very popular among the workers. Widespread condemnations poured in from people belong to all sections of society.
