20 ‘extortionists’ held in Capital
ISLAMABAD: An operation against extortionists has been begun in the capital by the city police after being directed by the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
According to police sources, the Islamabad police arrested more than 20 suspects for their involvement in extortion, during an anti–extortion drive in Sabzi Mandi and adjacent areas.
The police sources said on the direction of the IHC and the interior minister, they launched the operation and arrested seven for their involvement in extortion, while the gang leader escaped.
The police sources said arrests were made after vendors identified the extortionist. Another police official said the arrested were Afghan nationals.
He claimed the suspects were part of a gang that was involved in various extortion schemes, adding, “So far, they have extorted about 4.5 million rupees from vendors and cart owners.”
