Karachi: Rangers arrest 978 ‘criminals’ in 3 months
KARACHI: The Sindh Rangers said on Thursday they arrested 978 suspected criminals during raids across Karachi over the past three months.
The paramilitary force made the arrests during 1,003 raids conducted in different localities of the city. Among those rounded up were 14 terrorists, 104 target killers, 143 extortionists and 12 kidnappers, it said in a statement.
The Rangers launched the crackdown on September 5 after a special federal cabinet meeting decided to purge Karachi, the financial hub of the country, of criminals.
The statement said 1,714 weapons of different calibres, including light machineguns, SMGs, uni–barrel rocket launchers with ammunition, rifles, shotguns, pistols, hand grenades, crackers and bullet–proof jackets were seized during the raids.
During the last two months, Rangers conducted 21 encounters, during which 37 terrorists and two paramilitary soldiers were killed and 10 abductees rescued. The statement said certain quarters were presenting wrong information as facts, which would soon be clarified.
