41 held for staging sit-in in Karak
KARAK: Around 41 protesters were arrested during a raid on the sit–in camp set up by various rights organisations outside the oil field at Nashpa on Tuesday night. The protesters were reportedly shifted to the Central Prison Dera Ismail Khan and other jails in Karak.
The arrests were made after negotiations between the representatives of the protesters seeking increase in gas pressure and the district administration failed. District president of Khattak Ittehad Maulana Mirzaqeem, former Nazim Master Zardad and former councillor Rafi Khattak were arrested along with 38 others during the raid.
Meanwhile, the residents of Bahaderkhel, Khurram and other adjacent localities blocked the Kohat-Bannu Road against the arrests of the elders. The protesters demanded immediate release of the arrested persons.
The traders in Karak city also held protest against the arrests. A six–member committee headed by President of the Traders Association Haji Ayub was formed to hold talks with the deputy commissioner of Karak. The committee members said the local people were seeking increase in gas pressure, but the demand could not be met despite assurance from the quarters concerned.
