36 more suspects detained, 2 killed in raids
KARACHI: Three terrorists of the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) were arrested by the Anti–Extremism Cell (AEC) of the Crime Investigation Department on Wednesday, said AEC in–charge Ali Raza.
Raza said an informant told him about wanted terrorists, affiliated with a banned religious outfit and involved in recent sectarian killings in Karachi, taking refuge in Manghopir.
A police party comprising officials of the AEC and an intelligence agency conducted a raid in the locality. The law enforcers were met with armed resistance, resulting in an encounter, following which Mudassir, Kamran Khan and Shahid were arrested.
Four suicide vests, 100 kilograms of explosives, eight hand grenades, two Kalashnikovs, five 9mm and 30–bore pistols, 30 feet of detonating wire, five kilograms of ball bearings and nuts and bolts, an Alto fitted with a vehicle–borne improvised explosive device (VBIED), hundreds of bullets and other items used for making bombs.
During initial interrogation the accused disclosed that they were affiliated with the LeJ and were trained in preparing IEDs, with expertise in making magnetic bombs.
They also confessed to murdering several people on sectarian grounds. They said the explosives seized by the police were to be used for targeting important personalities or buildings.
The accused also carried out bomb attacks during the Chehlum procession near the Jinnah Complex on MA Jinnah Road last year. Moreover, they were involved in the bomb blast outside an Imambargah in Orangi Town on the same day.
They admitted murdering Awami National Party activist Qayyum Ali alias Asmatullah Khan in Sachal Town, Syed Kashif Hussain Zaidi in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Shadab alias Sherry in Mobina Town.
They had also attacked the Agha Haider Juice Centre near Maskan Chowrangi, which resulted in the deaths of Hussain Ali, Abdul Wahid and Nadir Ali, and injuries to three others.
It was disclosed by the accused that they had murdered shop owner Syed Sajjad Hussain in Bilawal Goth in the Mobina Town police precincts. They had also murdered Deedar Ali Jalbani and his guard Sarfaraz Ali Bangash in Mobina Town.
The accused confessed to carrying out most of the terrorist activities in Mobina Town. They also admitted planting a magnetic bomb on University Road, which resulted in the death of Shia scholar Wajahat Naqvi and injuries to his gunman.
They had targeted the Zuljanah procession passing through Mobina Town, resulting in the deaths of a participant of the procession and a horse. Moreover, they had targeted a man and his son at their PCO (public call office) in Gulzar-e-Hijri.
The accused had also attacked a vehicle of a private television channel’s officer at Nipa Chowrangi, resulting in the death of Syed Haider Hussain Rizvi and injuries to two of his sons.
The detainees confessed to murdering two Shia men who worked at a welder’s shop on University Road. They had also murdered Dr Iqbal Hussain and his wife Dilshan in the Sachal police precincts.
