Karachi: 7 tonnes hashish worth Rs1.56b seized
KARACHI: More than 7,000 kilograms of hashish were seized from a trailer in Gulshan–e-Iqbal in an early morning raid on Friday.
The police had received information about a consignment of narcotics being smuggled into Gulistan-e-Jauhar through a truck. A police team led by SHO Gulshan–e-Iqbal Aurangzeb Khattak spotted a suspicious 22–wheeler on Rashid Minhas Road near Moti Mehal and signalled it to stop. However, the driver accelerated the trailer. The police chased the vehicle and intercepted it, arresting the three suspects inside, said SSP (East) Syed Pir Mohammed Shah.
The police seized 7,250 kilograms of hashish from the truck, which was impounded. The suspects were identified as Mohammed Akhtar, Hayat Khan and Akhtar Zaib. They were shifted to the police investigation unit for further interrogation.
Shah said that it was the biggest contraband consignment ever seized by the Karachi police. The value of hashish in the international market was said to be around Rs1.56 billion.
Sindh IGP Iqbal Mehmood and AIG Karachi Shahid Hayat have both announced a reward of Rs500,000 each for the members of the police party, which seized the narcotics.
