47 profiteers fined, 4 arrested in Karachi
KARACHI: Forty–seven shopkeepers were handed down fines totalling Rs186,100 for overcharging customers on Wednesday in violation of the official price list of essential commodities.
Action against the profiteers was taken in different areas, including Korangi, Shah Faisal Colony, Gulberg, Liaquatabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Jamshed Quarters, Civil Lines and Garden.
As many as 37 milk sellers, one fruit vendor and three vegetable merchants were fined for violating the price list, while four milk sellers were arrested and sent to jail for repeatedly fleecing customers.
City commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqi said in a statement that an operation against profiteering was being conducted by the divisional and district administrations.
He said the crackdown against profiteers would continue till the time the sale of essential items in accordance with the price list was ensured.
Earlier this week, around 89 shopkeepers were fined Rs221,000 while six others were arrested for overpricing.
