Karachi: SIU arrests 3 bank robbers
KARACHI: The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) on Wednesday arrested three men involved in a bank heist conducted in the Korangi area on April 5.
SSP Mohammed Farooq Awan informed that the suspects, Imran Ali alias Immi alias Chota, Mohammed Iqbal and Mohammed Imran alias Munna, were arrested in a raid conducted in Landhi.
“The suspects did put up resistance but we were able to arrest them after a brief encounter.
During the interrogation, they confessed to the robbery at a branch of the Tameer Microfinance Bank in Korangi No 1½, in which over a million rupees were looted,” he said.
The robbers had also taken away several mobile phones from the staff, two pistols from security guards and the CCTV footage tapes.
However, the police were able to identify the suspects by gaining access to the footage stored in the back-up data at the bank’s head office.
“An informant recognised the trio and directed us to their hideout in Landhi. These men were planning another robbery and the United Bank Limited branch in the area was their target,” said Awan.
“The ringleader, Sajid Ali, managed to escape but we are trying our utmost to locate him and will apprehend him very soon.”
He added that a small portion of the looted money, Rs 94,000, was found from their hideout, along with two motorcycles, two TT pistols, a 30 bore pistol and several mobile phones.
