Rawalpindi: Man held for aerial firing near airport
RAWALPINDI: Security agencies of the twin cities got alert when a man resorted to firing in the air near the plane landing side of the Benazir Bhutto International Airport (BBIA) just before the arrival of prime minister’s flight from Karachi on Wednesday evening, police sources said.
Police and security agency officials rushed to the scene and arrested the gunman identified as Mazhar Abbas alias Maju. The arrested man is the gunman of Taji Khokhar, who is in jail on judicial remand for his alleged involvement in the killing of a woman, Sabra Bibi, police said.
The Airport Police said that at about 5:45 p.m., a man started aerial firing near Chowki Lalyal just before the landing of PM’s flight when route duty was placed for the security of Nawaz Sharif who was arriving from Karachi. Police and commandoes of the Elite Force rushed to the scene and arrested the man in dead drunk condition.
Police said that the arrested man identified as Maju was involved in many crimes, including murder, attempted murder and firing. Police have registered a case against the nabbed man and started investigation.
