Islamabad: Gang of ‘uniformed robbers’ busted
ISLAMABAD: Station House Officer (SHO) Koral Police Station Iftikhar Chatha, Sub–Inspector (SI) Qaim Ali Shah, Head Constable Tahir Mehmood and four others looted two gold merchants in Koral when they were going to Gujranwala with five–kilogram gold ornaments worth Rs25 million, police sources said. The CID Islamabad, after investigation, arrested the Koral SHO and head constable after lodging an FIR against the ‘police gang’.
CID SP Zubair Ahmad Shaikh, when contacted by this correspondent, confirmed the report, saying that on April 25, the ‘police gang,’ comprising SHO (Koral) Iftikhar Chatha and SI Qaim Ali Shah and some people belonging to Gujranwala, made a plan to loot gold merchants who used to buy gold from Rawalpindi and travel back to Gujranwala in routine.
The SHO’s ‘team’ intercepted gold merchants — Tahir Aziz and Mohammad Saleem — who were carrying about five–kilogram gold ornaments, and asked them to go to the police station as they possessed stolen gold. Police said that the gold merchants provided them with documents and receipts of the gold ornaments, but the ‘uniformed robbers’ pushed them into the police vehicle and kept roaming on different roads for bargaining, but the gold merchants were firm that they were doing legal business.
The CID SP said that Sub–Inspector Qaim Ali Shah pushed the gold merchants out of the vehicle on a road and sped away.
He said that the ‘victims’ straightaway went to the Koral Police Station to lodge an FIR against the ‘uniformed robbers,’ but the SHO (Koral) ensured them that he would manage to return the gold ornaments to them instead of lodging an FIR. In the meantime, the victims identified the head constable who was involved in the looting episode.
SP (CID) Zubair Ahmad Shaikh said that they went back to Gujranwala and used political influence to get justice, adding that the SSP Islamabad shifted the case to CID for investigation. During the course of investigation, SHO (Koral) Iftikhar Chatha, Sub–Inspector Qaim Ali Shah, Head Constable Tahir were found guilty, the SP said. He added that the SHO and the head constable have been arrested while Sub–Inspector Qaim Ali Shah and four others were at large. He said that some quantity of gold has also been recovered.
