4 ‘extortionists’ held in Karachi
KARACHI: The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) arrested four extortionists in an operation in the SITE area on Tuesday. SIU Chief SSP Mohammed Farooq Awan said the operation was carried out over a local businessman’s complaint about extortion calls and death threats. “The man was being pressured to pay Rs1 million. We negotiated with the extortionists and called them to the SITE area to collect the money,” he said.
Policemen in civvies were deployed around the area designated for the exchange. However, the criminals spotted the law enforcers and tried to flee under the cover of fire. An encounter ensued and the police eventually managed to arrest four extortionists identified as Syed Adnan, Talha, Mohammed Majid and Owais.
Four TT pistols were seized from their possession and they were shifted for interrogation. “They confessed to having extorted Rs1.5 million from Athar Abbas, a businessman living in Defence, a few months ago. They did not leave the man alone even after receiving the payment, and he left the country due to persistent threats,” said SSP Awan.
