Karachi: 3 cops arrested over break-in at DHA supermarket
KARACHI: Three personnel, including a sub–inspector, of the Darakhshan police were arrested on Friday as investigations proved their involvement in a robbery at a grocery store in DHA’s Badr Commercial area in the early hours of Thursday. The cops, identified as SI Hamzo Khan, Head Constable Mazhar Ali (Buckle No. 11041) and Constable Mohammed Ilyas (Buckle No. 6226), were taken into custody after they were positively identified in the CCTV footage of the incident.
Clifton SP Fida Hussain said the video shows the uniformed officers, who were on patrol in the area that night, entering the PK Mart on main 26th Street after a fourth accomplice had broken the locks of the store.
“They can be seen storming inside and fleeing with the store’s vault in an official patrol van. We have recovered Rs258, 000 and calling cards worth Rs92, 000 from their possession which will be handed back to the store owner,” he said.
SP Hussain condemned the incident and assured the guilty cops would be afforded no leniency as their act was an embarrassment for the entire force.
“They were on duty in the area that night and, instead of protecting the people and their properties, they took such a disgraceful step. We are also making efforts to locate the fourth man and will have him in custody soon,” said Hussain.
Darakhshan SHO Ahsan Zulfiqar confirmed that cases had been registered under Sections 380 and 457 of the PPC against the three officials serving under his command. However, citing ongoing investigations, he declined to comment further and said details would be shared over the coming days.
AIG Ghulam Qadir Thebo also condemned the incident and, according to police spokesperson Atique Shaikh, called for strict action against “any such black sheep in the force”.
