Karachi: Indian-made weapons seized, 2 suspects arrested in Orangi Town raid
KARACHI: Police arrested two suspects belonging to a political party and seized a huge cache of Indian-made arms and ammunition in a raid in Orangi Town in the wee hours of Friday.
The raid was conducted on a house located in Orangi Town No13 on information provided by the Inter–Services Intelligence (ISI), SSP District West Azfar Mehshar said at a media briefing in his office.
During a search of the house, the police found one rocket propel grenade, an anti–aircraft gun, eight light machineguns with magazines and a fitting belt, eight sub-machineguns (SMGs), 12,000 LMG and SMG bullets, two bullet–proof jackets, eight boxes of bullets and other material.
The SSP said the weapons were Indian–made (inscribed with SA-Local Rest Indian). The involved groups had been identified and two suspects, including the owner of the house, had been taken into custody, which belonged to a political party, he said.
Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah announced a reward of Rs3 million for the SSP West and his team for conducting the raid in Orangi Town and seizing the arms and ammunition. He announced Rs3 million for an ISI team that had provided information on which action was taken. Shah also announced Rs3 million for a Rangers team that had raided a terrorist hideout in Orangi Town on Sunday night when six alleged terrorists were killed in a shootout.
In three other raids, the District West police arrested three alleged terrorists belonging to different groups, who were involved in a number of killings, including murders of police and Rangers personnel.
SSP Mehshar said that acting on a tip-off a police team conducted raids in Mominabad, Surjani Town and Saeedabad areas and arrested Abdul Hafeez, a suspected target killer of the Lyari gang war group, with a 9mm pistol. The suspect is said to be involved in 13 target killings, including the murder of three policemen and a Rangers official.
Another alleged hit man, Hassan Ahmed, who belongs to a political party and is also involved in seven murder cases, was arrested in the Surjani Town raid. The third suspect, Mohammad Saleem, who belongs to a religious group, was taken into custody in Saeedabad. He is charged with six murders. Police are conducting further investigations.
